42. House Dad 3: Let's Deprecate the Term "Stay at Home Dad"

I initially thought the term Stay at Home Dad was fine, before I became one.

Now that I am a SAHD, I have the right to deprecate it.

Instead, let's start using the term House Dad.

Reasons to ditch the term SAHD:
  1. It's pathetic. The acronym SAHD may be ironically funny, but the humor dies quickly.
  2. It takes too much time to say. However there's no good acronym (see problem number 1). So I personally don't have the energy to even say it very often.
  3. It's redundant. "Home" already indicates the primary seat of the function of "Dad."
  4. It tries to re-invent the wheel. The term "House Mom" already exists. Why not simply masculinize it, rather than create a more complex term?
Reasons to use the term House Dad:
  1. It's neutral.
  2. It's not redundant, so the term does not beat you over the head. Lack of redundancy enhances clarity.
  3. It rolls off the tongue. An acronym is unnecessary, since "House Dad" is only two syllables.
  4. It's an established term.
Germans use the term Hausmann (House Husband) to denote a House Dad. I rather like the sound of this term, but it's not specific enough since it contains Mann (Husband). The problem is, the term does not indicate whether or not the guy is a father (Vater).

What do you think?
